1st International Seminar on Nutrition & Sport

The Elite Athlete Gut Microbiota

26 August 2023

1st International Seminar on Nutrition & Sport

The International Seminar on Nutrition & Sport is a collaborative project between Real Madrid and Abbott to bring the science of nutrition and physical exercise to everyone around the globe. During the  first educational seminar, Paul Cotter, doctor of molecular biology and expert in microbiology, delivered a presentation in Real Madrid City, Valdebebas, entitled: “The Elite Athlete Gut Microbiota”.

In his presentation, Dr. Cotter described the characteristics of the athlete gut microbiota, discussed the interplay between the gut microbiota and exercise, and evaluated dietary interventions to optimize the gut microbiota.

The science around the athlete gut microbiota is an evolving field of upmost scientific and sport interest. The gut microbiota plays an essential role in key aspects of nutrition, health, and exercise, such as nutrient absorption, intestinal function, and immune system. Dr. Cotter illustrated how the gut microbiota can grant the athlete a metabolic advantage that might be key for physical function and sport performance. Lastly, the expert addressed how through diet and exercise can athletes optimize their gut microbiota.

This is another example of the ways Abbott scientists and Real Madrid’s medical team are working together to co-develop research, host events, and push the limits across key topics including recovery, hydration, nutrition and performance to allow athletes of all skill levels to reach their full potential.
